Actors are provided with a brief and using improvisation give a participant an opportunity to test and develop their skills.  The actor can be guided as to their characters’ attitude, tone and mannerisms.  The actor can assist in evaluation by contributing to the feedback in an objective and constructive way.

For this type of role-play actors learn a script, which is used to prompt or respond to a participant's questions and/or behaviour. Any topic can be addressed and the role play can be led by the participant or the actor.  The level of challenge can be carefully assessed and determined beforehand

Actors are asked to portray a situation (of the clients’ choice) whilst being observed by participants either individually or as a group.  After the role-play, participants discuss the role play and suggest different options and changes to the actors to enable them to replay the situation so that participants can observe how their comments can influence proceedings.  This is a very useful method for tackling difficult and sensitive situations.

Using the skills of professional actors to bring reality to role play training sessions is a highly effective and well established training method.  Candidates can practice skills in various and relevant competencies.

Through role play participants gain practice at facing 'real life' situations and are given the chance to simulate encounters with customers, clients, colleagues, in a safe environment.

Role play is used for training purposes in both the public and private sectors.

It is used by the NHS, banks, supermarkets, in education institutes, social services to name but a few.Role play is widely used to help develop communication skills, problem solving and in highlighting new ways of tackling problems.  By using professional actors in a role play situation different characters can be portrayed for training purposes.  Actors are flexible and can behave in a variety of manners being challenging, arrogant, aggressive, withdrawn etc.  Actors have the ability to respond realistically to a candidate and are trained to give objective and constructive feedback.  Actors will be consistent in their role play when seeing different candidates in order to assess performance. When using professional actors the Facilitator has the option to ‘replay’ part or all of the role play scenario after feedback.  Often Facilitators opt to video the role plays and watch them back with the participant.  This is a very valuable and powerful method of learning for participants.

There are various role play methods available.
